Clapton himself has admitted to unknowingly ripping off the introduction to “Stairway to Heaven” for inclusion in this number from his album 461 Ocean Boulevard, released in 1974. In his 2007 autobiography the guitarist confesses that this was “a cruel justice,” since, as a devoted blues purist himself, he had often been critical of Led Zeppelin’s liberal takes on the Delta and Chicago canons. “Let It Grow” is still a nice tune, however, and the listener has to attend carefully for the “Stairway” snippet.
